There's no need to say a dicky bird about this next iconic brand...
Dicky Bird's Ice Cream is included in our Cockney collection because it was a much loved brand of ice cream all over East London and Essex - if you are of a certain age.
Dicky Bird's was established by Herbert J. Bird and his wife Mary, who operated a shop at 745 High Road, Tottenham, where they made boiled sweets and ice cream.
The business soon expanded beyond the local shop, becoming a significant ice cream manufacturer with a factory in Alfred's Way, Barking, operating from 1937 to the early 1960s.
Famous for their "Fro-Joys" and "Glo-Joys" - they sold a huge range of ice cream products: from blocks, to choc ices, and their popular range of fruit lollies and milk lollies: (some of the flavours always mentioned are: mint, pear, lemon, orange, raspberry, chocolate, banana, and strawberry). Household freezers and even fridges were not common-place at the time - so ice cream products were usually consumed shortly after purchase).
They were known for their door-to-door sales in Essex using their Dicky Bird branded three-wheeler box cycles and later, motorcycles to deliver products, calling our their famous sales slogan "Choc Ices they're love-r-ly!"
Cooling Method: The ice cream was kept cold in boxes on the tricycles using solid carbon dioxide, known as "Cardice".
In January 1963, Dicky Bird Ltd was merged into MICA (Ice Cream) Ltd, which was linked to the J. Lyons & Co. food empire.
