Martello Tower view badge

One of the most iconic views of the park - the Martello tower surrounded by caravans. Caravans were only sited here after the Tower Bar had shut its doors for the last time.

Originating as the Southcliffe Trailer Camp, The Martello Caravan Park was established by Douglas Garton, a Colchester based transport contractor, along with Florence Garton and Kate Norfolk.

The Gartons' son Robin, later provided the entertainment at the Martello with his band.  Robin also ran a Martello Studios from the basement of the Martello tower on-site, producing jingles, advertisements, recordings, even recording his own band's singles on the Big T / Martello label.

Many other entertainers would appear over the course of the years at the Martello as well as Robin's much loved dance band; the Benny Harris Set, Bryan and Charlie, and later Bryan and Tom (after Charlie sadly passed away).
